Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Crayons : Review, Swatches & Photos

Marc Jacobs, Matte Highliner, Eyeliner, Popular, Pink of Me, review

This I wasn't expecting...When I received my first Vox Box from review site, Influenster, I thought I just got lucky! But when a second notification appeared that another Marc Jacobs Vox Box was on its way, I felt rather pleased with myself. This time the box featured not one but two Matte Gel Eye Crayons from the Highliner range - however, I did feel rather intimidated when I discovered they were both Pink! Lol! Has Spring come early? Now I love coloured liners, but I have to say I've never used pink before and wondered how on earth I was going to pull this off without looking like I had an eye infection. Lol!

The Story With Liners

My story with liners  has never been a successful one and have become convinced that I must have the most watery, oiliest eyes on the planet. Nothing seems to last very long along the waterline, and I also suffer with smudging issues under the eye area as well, which means regular checks to the mirror to see if I've transformed into a panda; and even when set with shadow, some liners still suck! There are tips and tricks that you can do to help, but I'm not always prepared to go that extra mile. Call me lazy, I just wanna line and be done with it!

Marc Jacobs eye liners are known to contain one of the most raved about formulas in the industry, many claiming that these bad boys just don't budge (I'll get back to that claim in a mo...) which they don't when swatched on the back of your hand, and have always required some serious rubbing in order to get them off!

The Highliner Gel Crayons

These Matte Highliner Gel Crayons come in a retractable/twist up format that also comes enclosed with a tiny screw sharpener hidden at the end of the pencil (marked in black). There are 12 shades available in total within this particular range. I was sent (Pop)ular (the bolder and more coral pink) and Pink Of Me (the lighter one).

The application of these liners is an absolute dream to work with. They are creamy and glide-on smoothly across the skin without the slightest tug. I find a lot of long wear formulas make my eyes very watery - especially along the waterline, I can feel that grip like they're trying to hold on, making them very uncomfortable to wear - not these! These also give you enough play time to blend before setting.

The shades (Pop)ular and Pink of Me are nicely pigmented and are surprisingly wearable - even on me. Whilst I'd definitely consider myself to be way past that age for those trendy editorial looks, I rather enjoyed pairing the deeper pink (Popular) with a black liner to create an instant pop of colour! The lighter shade (Pink of Me) worked just as well with this technique, albeit just keeping it to the top lid this time, and I also took advantage of it's wide a wake hue to brighten up the tear duct area and also along the waterline. These would also work well as a base when creating stronger and more vibrant looks.

However, like with a lot of liners I've experienced, some shades do perform better than others, and whilst these do disappear from my waterline (I also have the shade Earthquake from a previous purchase) I do find setting these with shadow/powder or blending these slightly helps the longevity of these, but as in saying that, they last a hell of a lot longer than others I've tried because once set, they just last and last!

L- R: (Pop)ular & Pink on Me.

Below I'm sharing just how effective coloured liners can be and needn't be scary, just by applying the most basic and easiest liner techniques which anyone can do. (Pop)ular was used with Black liner. Pink of Me was also used to brighten the inner tear duct area.

Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Crayons can be purchased from selected John Lewis stores and online - £20.00 each.
